ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Myra Linn Elementary School

TITLE I

The intent of this categorical program is to improve the teaching and learning of children who are at risk or not meeting challenging academic standards and who reside in areas with high concentrations of low income families.  The funds are used to close the gap between high and low-performing students with effective research-based strategies and materials.

The goal is to provide a high quality education for each child.  Students who are most in need of help are identified by standardized tests and teacher recommendation.  Goals are set for improvement.  Student progress is measured.  Programs are developed to enhance classroom instruction.  Materials are purchased to supplement core materials.  Parents are involved with classroom contact with the teacher.  Family Education Nights, informal meetings such as the Principal’s coffees, and volunteer activities with the PTA, ELAC and School Site Council are opportunities for family involvement.  A computer lab, staffed by an instructional assistant and equipped with up-to-date equipment, is paid for by Title I.  Software programs enhance student learning in language arts, math, and other subject areas.

TECHNOLOGY

Myra Linn takes great pride in providing up to date technology that supports both teaching and learning.  All classes visit the computer Lab weekly and a new mini lab has been added for special student needs.  There is a 4:1 ratio of students to computers in all 1st-5th grade classrooms and a 5:1 ratio in Kindergartens.  Software programs support learning in California Standards and writing skills.  Students are guided in internet research on appropriate websites.  Teachers share information with students on LED projectors, ELMO projectors, and computer to TV hook-ups.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

School Improvement funds provide admission for student study trips.  PTA funds pay for the buses.  SIP programs also enhance core curriculum, educate students about health issues, expand character development through assemblies, and offer programs to prevent the use of drugs and violence.  Funding assists teachers to enhance the core curriculum by providing copiers and duplos.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (LEP)

Bilingual Assistants work with beginning and early intermediate English Language Learners in the classroom under the direction of the classroom teacher.  There is a bilingual coordinator who monitors the program for ELL students.  She acts as liaison with the district ELL office, and completes compliance documents.  Materials may be purchased with LEP funds that specifically benefit ELLs in enhancing their ability to learn the core curriculum.  There is parent education for the parents of ELL students to help them support their students and formulate high goals for their education.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT AT MYRA LINN

There are many opportunities for parents to become engaged in the life of the school.  Meetings help to explain academic standards and expectations, to solicit parental support for student assessment, and learn about the 40 development assets that improve a student’s chances of success and reduce the risk of failure.

The front office secretaries are bilingual and offer assistance to parents in filling out forms, etc.  Family Education Nights are conducted by teachers to inform parents about academic programs.  There is a school compact signed by parents, teachers, and students so that each group understands the role they play in student success.  Parent conferences offer the chance for parents and teachers to talk about student progress.  There are three report cards per year at the end of each trimester, and progress reports when necessary.  At Back-to-School Night, families visit the classrooms and view student work.  For Open House, there is an opportunity to learn more about the work of students.  Informally, parents may meet with the principal at Principal’s Coffees.

Kindergarten parents have an orientation for parents in the spring.  Pre-kindergarten children may attend readiness classes in Spanish every Tuesday and Thursday from the beginning of May to the end of June, and visit the library to choose books, borrow and take home.

For those who like to play a role in supporting the school through fund-raising and policy-making, there are groups such as the School Site Council, English Learners Advisory Committee, Gifted and Talented Advisory Group, and the Parent Teacher Association.  Child Care is provided for many of these meetings.  There is Spanish Translation as well.

The Principal’s door is always open.  There is a bulleting that goes home to families several times a year, and school newspaper staffed by students as reporters advised by a teacher, frequent announcements that are sent home concerning upcoming events, and a marquee announcing important dates.  Myra Linn is proud that our students wear uniforms (white or blue shirts and khaki or blue pants, shorts, or skirts).  Parents, students and teachers are proud of our academic growth as measured by standardized tests, and of our character education program to develop good habits of citizenship.
